Every brushed Shetland is made to order on our vintage brushing machines. Dating from the 1950s, they're fitted with natural teasels: the dried seed heads of a thistle. It's a traditional way of raising wool, and it can't be hurried.

The teasels gently lift the fibres of the wool, giving that soft, fuzzy, shaggy finish. The more passes, the fluffier it becomes. You choose how far we go.

How it works

Step 1

Choose your Shetland

Pick your style and colour from our seamless Harley of Scotland Shetlands.

Step 2

Choose your brushing

Select Shaggy, Triple or Quad brushed on the product page.

Step 3

We brush it for you

Your Shetland is brushed to order with natural teasels on our 1950s machines, then sent to you.

Choose your brushed Shetland level

Each level is the number of teasel passes on each side of the garment, so Shaggy is brushed twice on the front and twice on the back. From a soft halo to a cloud of wool, we will never brush a Shetland more than four times.

Brushed twice

Shaggy

The classic shaggy look. A slightly fuzzy finish with a mildly thicker, softer handle, and the most supple of our brushings.

Brushed three times

Triple Brushed

A very fuzzy look. The individual stitches soften and blur, giving the jumper a cloud-like appearance while it stays lovely and supple.

Brushed four times

Quad Shaggy

Our most brushed finish, with an almost felted look and a denser, plusher handle. The extra brushing has an airbrushed effect that lightens the colour a little.

This is a suggestion only, to help you choose. The final choice is always yours.

Please note: brushed garments can't be returned

Brushing is a customised service that alters the garment beyond our normal stock, so a custom brushed garment is completely non-returnable, even for exchange.

Not sure yet? Order an unbrushed Shetland to try first. If you'd prefer it brushed, you can return the unbrushed one and order it brushed.
